Passy is a charming town located in Haute Savoie just north of St Gervais Les Bains. It’s a functioning French mountain town active all year round and offers all the amenities you’d require for a lovely mountain break, holiday home or permanent residence in the French Alps.
Passy isn’t particularly well known for it ski area as it’s relatively small although it is part of the Mont Blanc ski domain opening up access to a vast area of wonderful skiing and snowboarding terrain. There’s also the Evasion Mont Blanc area to the south about 10 minutes drive away and Le Grand Massif 30 minutes drive to the north.
Due to its distance from the large ski areas buying property in Passy could be a cost effective way of getting that bolt hole in the Alps. For most of the accommodation here, be it a mountain side chalet or apartment, transport is required to reach the big ski areas which is one of the biggest effectors on property prices in the Alps. If you’re considering buying to rent then offering a chauffeur service might be worth considering or ensuring your new property is close to a shuttle bus route.
Passy has a huge range of non-skiing related activities to enjoy such as guided Via Ferrata, orienteering at Lac Vert, Lac Passy & Lac Gris, the international Mont Blanc triathlon, the festival of sports, hiking, climbing and paragliding. The Jardin des Cimes, 6 acres of gardens, is also a wonderful place to visit for an afternoon.
There’s also plenty to keep the kids entertained. The Winter White Base Camp is a fun day at Plaine Joux with a number of children’s activities including sledding, hiking and dog sledding. The Fête des lutins is a kids festival, also held in Plaine Joux, with games, shows and workshops for children of all ages.
The ski area in Passy is called Passy Plaine Joux and is the perfect place for children to learn how to ski or snowboard with giant toys provided for them to play with on the slopes.
For accomplished skiers and boarders there’s a few red and blue runs winding through the forest on the side of the mountain and with the right lift pass you can also access the neighbourghing resorts of Chamonix, Les Houches, St Gervais and Megeve.
There’s also a snow park for freestylers to practise their technique and hone their skills and free Nordic skiing across 15km of runs.
As the snow melts in Passy it reveals beautiful mountain meadows and forests ideal for hiking, mountain biking and climbing. The town thrives with various events and festivals held throughout the summer months and so there’s always something to do for both adults and children. A large part of Passy is occupied by the Réserve Naturelle de Passy which provides some beautiful walks and scenery. There are guided walks such as the Tour of Fiz which takes 3-5 days and paragliding is very popular in the area allowing those with a taste for adventure breathtaking views of the mountains and valleys.
